How to Become a Soccer Referee

All USSF Referees must recertify every year. Please register for the upcoming clinics at the Illinois Soccer Referee Committee (ISRC) website. Click on the CLINICS tab, then the CLINIC SCHEDULE link to view clinics available in the surrounding areas.

All requirements to become a referee are stated on the Illinois Soccer Referee Committee website. PLEASE check their website often for complete details.

Sign up for Grade 8 Entry level

Current requirements: (check ISRC website as things change):

Must pass a state exam

Must pass a background check (18 years and above)

Must complete SafeSport training (18 years and above)

Must complete concussion training

Must be 13 years old by March 31, 2020

Must obtain a work permit (under 16 years old)

Courses usually are posted on the ISRC website starting in November and run from January through March.

Sign up for Grade 8 Entry level courses are one day or two days. Courses fill up fast!

SAA Rec soccer welcomes new referees into its program each year and provides referee mentoring to those dedicated to improving as a referee. If you are certified and would like to be considered to referee for SAA Rec soccer click (here). Being a referee is a job and must be taken seriously for all involved to enjoy a soccer match. SAA Rec does not guarantee any amount of games to referees in its referee group.
